2014 Lutheran Church – Canada Convention Report

Pastor Laverne Hautz was a voting delegate and High School Principal Luke Adam was an advisory delegate at the Tenth Convention of Lutheran Church – Canada at UBC on the weekend of June 6 – 9. Here are some of the highlights of the Convention and its business:

  • The Opening Worship Service was held at the Holy Rosary Cathedral with some 700 worship-ers – convention participants and local Luther-ans. A 70 – voice choir singing Haydn’s “The Heavens are Telling” was a highlight of the evening.
  • The Convention re-elected Robert Bugbee as Synodical President, with Nolan Astley, Tom Kruesel and Mark Smith as Vice-Presidents.
  • The Convention essays were presented by Deacon Jennifer Shack (the history of the diaconate in LCC) and Pastor Kurt Reinhardt (“Come to Him who Answers Prayer” – the Convention theme).
  • Several presenters offered workshops on Saturday afternoon. (Pastor Laverne offered a work-shop on personal devotional life.)
  • Greetings were brought from leaders of various partner churches around the world.
  • Several resolutions were passed – some amending by-laws of the Synod, some about governance of Concordia University College of Alberta, some about the role and participation of deacons.
  • Various agencies of the church at large had dis-plays to educate delegates on their role in mission.
  • Sunday night featured “A Night With Katie Luther” – a monologue about Katie’s childhood and then her life as the wife of the great re-former.
  • Other Convention updates will be available online and in the next issue of The Canadian Lutheran.
