Parent Teacher League (PTL) News

Our Family Fun Event is on Saturday, September 14, from 1:00-5:00 pm at the Port Coquitlam campus.  This event will include an ice cream sundae bar, bouncy inflatables and games.   All families and staff members are welcome – please indicate your attendance in this link so we can adequately prepare.  Family Fun Attendance

Lunchtime Supervision

We are looking for volunteers for lunchtime supervision at the Port Coquitlam Campus from 11:50 am – 12:45 pm each day.  This extra support is needed so the kids can go over to McLean Park. Kilometre (Km) Club 

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY:  In preparation for the start of Km Club, we need to create wristbands on Thursday, September. 12 in the Connection Room, off the foyer, at the Port Coquitlam Campus.  If you are able to spare two hours on Thursday morning, please email Lisa Klym at [email protected]

Kilometer Club starts on Monday, September 16.  Runs will take place Monday, Wednesday and Friday after school. This will also serve as a training run for the grade 4-8 students participating in the Cross Country track meets.

Registration is conducted online this year.  Please access Km Club Registration to register your child or yourself.

About 15-20 volunteers are needed each day for the running of this event. If your child is participating, it is strongly encouraged that caregivers volunteer a minimum of three times throughout the duration of the run. Volunteers are needed to: set up, hand out wristbands, conduct warm-up, be a course spotter, stamper, tally laps, clean up, and run concession.  Your time spent helping with Km Club counts towards the Parent Volunteer Hours.

Volunteer Opportunities – 2019/2020 School Year

We have several vacancies, listed below, to fill for the coming year.  Please email the PTL at [email protected] to express interest in any of these positions.

  1. Class Liaisons:  Vacancies remain for 6B, 7A and 7/8. 
  2. Emergency Preparedness:  The PTL is looking to train a parent in September.  Help is needed with student ID tags and sorting comfort kits, as well as checking and updating classroom emergency bags.  
  3. Lice Check:  Parents are needed starting in September to perform lice checks throughout the school year.  No experience necessary, training will be provided. 
  4. Events Photographer:  Parents are invited to take on the role of Event Photographer at all our social and athletic events.  We’d like to capture action and behind-the-scenes photos at all our school events. If you have an interest in photography and would like to be included as a contact person, please contact us. 
  5. Christmas Hampers:  A Coordinator is required at the beginning of November to send out a Sign Up Genius link to Class Liaisons, arrange for donation boxes and recruit volunteers help to designate items to pre-determined families.

Port Coquitlam Campus Connection Room

The side foyer room has been newly renovated and is now being called the Connection Room.  This room will be open for parents every morning from 8:40-9:30 am for you to socialise. If parents wish to book the Connection Room for their use, please make arrangements through the school office.

The PTL will host a Coffee Fellowship in the Connection Room on Friday, September 13 at 8:40 am.  This is a chance for you to connect with Mr. Lok and Mrs. Watson, any other available school staff, as well as any available PTL members – find out what’s happening in the life of our school and submit ideas for activities or improvements.  

If you would like to provide baking for the Coffee Fellowships, please email Lisa Klym at [email protected].  The time you spend baking will count toward your volunteer hours.

New Initiatives

Compassion Ministry

To foster a greater sense of community and support the needs of our Hope staff and student families, a Compassion Ministry has been formed.  This ministry addresses sudden and immediate needs that may occur within our school community such as a hospitalization, critical illness, or other needs where the family would benefit from prepared meals and/or light housekeeping and childcare.

Requests would be handled on an as-needed basis and will be kept discrete.  If you would like to volunteer to be a contact for this ministry, please email Lisa Klym at [email protected]

Fall Book Club for Parents

The summer book club was a success and, therefore, we will be running it again in the fall.  The study book will be “Fresh Wind, Fresh Fire – What Happens When God’s Spirit Invades the Hearts of His People”, by Jim Cymbala.  The discussions will be facilitated by Michele Malmberg.  Participants are to purchase their own book. Community Relations

Monthly Community Newsletter – Name our newsletter!   We are starting a Hope community newsletter published by the Middle School newsletter club.  Submit your ideas for the name of our newsletter to [email protected]

The purpose of the school newsletter is to highlight the ongoing achievements of students, celebrate accomplishments and introduce one another.  The newsletter will be published monthly with a focus on getting to know a student, parent and staff member by way of interviewing or submission of a bio.  Students will be responsible for interviewing and writing the articles as well as other content.  

If your child has a special achievement recently earned or something you’d like to highlight, we are accepting submissions for the September newsletter.  Please email me your story ideas at [email protected].

Going forward, a call for submissions will be posted at the beginning of each month with a distribution date of the last Friday of the month.


Emergency Release

Today students will be taking home a letter outlining our Emergency Release coming up on Tuesday, October 1st.  Please review this information to ensure all of your information is up to date. More details will follow as we approach this event. 



Lunch hour Supervision Training Sessions

One way to make up your volunteer hours is by coming in during our lunch hour and helping with supervision on the playground and in the classrooms.  If you are interested in volunteering in this position please come to the school at 11:20 am any day this week for a quick meeting on some of the school’s procedures and expectations.


After School Activities

An update of current and upcoming after school activities will be sent out this Thursday, September 12, afternoon.  Student sign up links will be included in the notice.


Yearbook Orders

If you would like to order a yearbook for $25 each, you can do so either by cheque or online:

Cheque: pick up a form from the school office to complete; make the cheque out to Hope Lutheran School; on the memo line of the cheque please write “Yearbook”, the school year, your child’s name and their class

The deadline for ordering yearbooks is January 31, 2020.

Terry Fox Run

Our school will be participating in the Terry Fox Run again this year.  Pledge sheets will be sent home soon. Fundraising is optional, but all students will participate in the run after chapel on September 18.  Parent volunteers are needed for this event; please contact Mrs. Berg for more information ([email protected]).


Cross Country

Our grade 4 and 5 cross country practices will start next week on Tuesday and Thursdays during lunch time (12:00 to 12:25 pm). Cross country team members must also be participating in the school Km club. 

Our race is October 23 at Bear Creek Park in Surrey. Registration information will be sent out next week. We need parent helpers to set up and supervise our runs on Tuesday and Thursdays. Please email Mr. Mathew ([email protected])  if you can help.

Hot Lunch Program at Hope Lutheran School

It’s that time of year again! Please log on to http://thelunchlady.ca/ and place your orders for the designated Hot Lunch dates. If you were part of the program last year, there is no need to create a new account. Just log in and choose your child’s name under their new classrooms. Important Ordering Tips: (please read)

Cutlery and straws will only be provided if you select them to order. As part of our school’s litter free campaign, these plastic items will be added to your child’s order upon request 

Condiments – ketchup, mustard, mayo, pickles, lettuce, extra soya sauce packets and extra syrup can be ordered and added to your orders

If you find the Entree’s not enough for your child’s growing appetite, hot and cold side items are available to add to your orders
