New Families Check-In

Tomorrow morning, September 29, at 9:00 – 9:30 am at the Port Coquitlam (Elementary Campus) we would like to check in with our new families.  Please join us in the front parking lot after the students have made their way inside and share with Mrs. Watson and Mr. Lok about your experience so far with the Hope community and school life.  We would love to hear your feedback and support you in any questions you may have.


Individual Student Photo Day – Formal Uniform Required

Get ready to put on your best smile! Tuesday, September 29, is Individual Student Photo Day at the Port Coquitlam campus (Pitt Meadows campus photo day is September 30).  Students will be required to be in their formal uniforms.

Some tips from our photo company, Mountain West, to help your child(ren) prepare for photo day:

  1. Parents, before your children leave for school on photo day, please remember to look them over and help them look their best. Faces that are clean and clothes that are stain-free will make for great photos!
  2. Wearing glasses may result in glass glare and/or shadows on the face, and are difficult to retouch. For best results, please consider asking your child to remove their glasses for their photos.

Note: We are working on a plan for Hope’s home based learning students to have their individual photos taken on our scheduled Retake Photo day, October 27.  More details will be shared as plans are confirmed.


Masks

We are incredibly thankful to T&T Supermarket Inc for their partnership and support through this pandemic.  They have made a very generous donation of disposable masks to our entire school community. These are single-use non-medical masks that are manufactured in a FDA/CE certified facility.  Each child will be bringing home a box of masks today that you may use as needed.


Recess OR Lunch Supervisor Needed

As you are aware, due to COVID we have staggered our recess and lunch times.  This has resulted in an increase in our need for supervision.  We are looking for an adult who could do supervision at either Recess (10:00-11:30am) or Lunch (11:30am – 1:00pm) everyday.  This is a paid position and will require a criminal record check and first aid certification.  If you are interested please send your resume to Jennifer Watson at the school [email protected].


Storage Space Needed

With our reduced class sizes and need for spacing out in our classrooms, we have a number of “extra” desks that have no home.  We are hoping to find a temporary storage space for these desks (approx. space needed 10ft x 10ft) until such time that we need them back in the classrooms.  If you have garage space that you will not need for the next few months please get in touch with Mrs. Watson at the school.


Terry Fox Run: 40th Anniversary of the Marathon of Hope!

Hope Lutheran Christian School will be participating in this year’s 40th Anniversary of Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope on October 1st. Please help show your support by donating to our school’s online fundraising page http://www.terryfox.ca/HopeLutheranChristianSchool

Parents are encouraged to help their child(ren) create their own fundraising page – just follow the directions given on the link above. In order to keep our kids safe, individual classes will run throughout the day. Remember to wear red and/or white on Thursday, October 1st. Thank you for your supporting our school in the fight against cancer and keeping Terry’s dream alive!


School Library: Home-based Learners

There have been some requests from home-based learners to access the school library.  Unfortunately, with our COVID measures in place we are not able to accommodate this request at this time.  Families at home wanting books may wish to visit their public library website for curbside pick-up/drop-off options.  We will continue to evaluate this as the year progresses and will let you know if any changes will occur.


Hot Lunch is Starting

Starting October 2,  the PTL will be facilitating a Hot Lunch program 2x a month through The Lunch Lady Company.

If you are a new family with no previous account, you will need to set up your new account.

If you have an existing account with The Lunch Lady, you will need to select “Forgot Password” to reset your account.

Parent Teacher League (PTL) News

Parent Prayer

Everyone is welcome to join us for Parent Prayer every Monday evening on Zoom from 7:00 – 7:30 pm (except for holidays).

Km Club Ongoing!

Kilometre (Km) Club has started and will continue until October 30th.  This year we need to conduct a hybrid approach for the elementary campus with two 30 minute runs happening from home and one 20 min run during time at school each Wednesday.  For those middle school or distance learning students, you will need to run from home 3 times and enter your kilometres each week.  All students can look for the breaks in the weather to get outside and run from home.

Shoe tokens will be awarded for each 6km run. To mark our 25th anniversary, a special “25” token will be awarded for each 25 kilometres achieved!

Parents of K-5, please ensure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather each Wednesday, having outdoor running shoes and a water bottle.   Additionally, please have a change of socks for your child.  We will run in light rain, however, the run will be cancelled with weather like we had last Wednesday.

Supporting Our Staff

The PTL recognizes the hard work and extra effort our teachers and other staff members put into their jobs, often working outside of classroom hours and into the evenings.  To support our dedicated staff members, the PTL is supplying the Staff Rooms at each campus with a Snack Bar – a selection of healthy, non-perishable snack items that staff can access while working after hours.  

Our own Schroder Family, owners of Nutri-Nation Functional Foods, are manufacturers of healthy snacking alternatives and they have graciously offered to donate items to our snack bar.  Thank you, Schroder Family, for supporting us in this way!

At our recent PTL meeting, Parents expressed interest in donating snack items for this initiative.  Please drop off donated snack items to the campus offices.  Suggested items are individually packaged granola bars, protein bars, dried fruit bars and dried soup cups.  Nothing too sweet or sticky.  Thank you to those Parents who have dropped off donations.  They have been gratefully received!

Fundraising Initiative

Save your cans and bottles!  Our recycling fundraiser with ReturnIt Express BC will kick off shortly.  Pre-labelled recycling bags will be sent home with the youngest child of each family in early October.  Beverage recycling can be returned at any BC Return It Express station.

Volunteering

Even though our opportunities to gather are limited, we can still find ways to connect through volunteering with other parents.  Available opportunities:

  1. Monday, October 5th, 9am:  3-4 parents are needed to help with labelling recycling bags for our fundraiser.  We will meet in the PoCo Campus library at 9am.  Please email Lisa Klym if you are available to help ([email protected]
  2. Wednesdays, K-5:  We require parents from each grade K-5 to assist with their class supervision each Wednesday during the assigned running time.  A link to that sign-up is here:   Km Club Weds Course Supervision

Community Newsletter

Submissions are open for the November newsletter.  Do you have a personal achievement or special event you’d like to have recognised? 

November 11th is Remembrance Day, an opportunity to pay respect to and honor our national heroes who have fought to keep our freedom.  Do you have a hero; someone special in your life who has made a profound difference; someone you honour and respect?  Write a tribute about them and we’ll feature it in our November edition.  Please email Lisa Klym with your submissions at [email protected]

Additionally, we’ll be starting a new column called “Caught in the Act…”  This will feature students who have been “caught” doing good – performing an act of service or kindness, collecting money for a charity, a community garbage cleanup, etc.  We want to encourage our children to realise the small things they can do to make a difference in their spheres of influence and show the love of God to the world around them.
