Parent Teacher League (PTL) News

Lunchtime Supervision

We are looking for volunteers for lunchtime supervision at the Port Coquitlam Campus from 11:50 am – 12:45 pm each day.  This extra support is needed so the kids can go over to McLean Park. Kilometre (Km) Club 

Kilometer Club started today.  Runs will take place Monday, Wednesday and Friday after school. This will also serve as a training run for the grade 4-8 students participating in the Cross Country track meets.

About 15-20 volunteers are needed each day for the running of this event. If your child is participating, it is strongly encouraged that caregivers volunteer a minimum of three times throughout the duration of the run. Volunteers are needed to: set up, hand out wristbands, conduct warm-up, be a course spotter, stamper, tally laps, clean up, and run concession.  Your time spent helping with Km Club counts towards the Parent Volunteer Hours.

Volunteer Opportunities – 2019/2020 School Year

We have several vacancies, listed below, to fill for the coming year.  Please email the PTL at [email protected] to express interest in any of these positions.

  1. Waste Bins to Curb (PoCo):  This would be ideal for a parent dropping at before school care.  Our waste bins need to be taken to the curb each pick up morning by 7:30 am.  If this is a job for you, please contact the office.
  2. Emergency Preparedness:  The PTL is looking to train a parent in September.  Help is needed with student ID tags and sorting comfort kits, as well as checking and updating classroom emergency bags.  Please email [email protected].
  3. Events Photographer:  Parents are invited to take on the role of Event Photographer at all our social and athletic events.  We’d like to capture action and behind-the-scenes photos at all our school events. If you have an interest in photography and would like to be included as a contact person, please contact us. 
  4. Christmas Hampers:  A Coordinator is required at the beginning of November to send out a Sign Up Genius link to Class Liaisons, arrange for donation boxes and recruit volunteers help to designate items to pre-determined families.

Coffee Fellowship

We enjoyed our first PTL Coffee Fellowship this past Friday.   A special thanks to those who provided the lovely baking.   

The PTL will host a Coffee Fellowship in the Connection Room each month.  Our next meeting date is Friday, October 18 at 8:40 am. This is a chance for you to connect with Mr. Lok and Mrs. Watson, any other available school staff, as well as any available PTL members – find out what’s happening in the life of our school and submit ideas for activities or improvements.  

If you would like to provide baking for the Coffee Fellowships, please email Lisa Klym at [email protected].  The time you spend baking will count toward your volunteer hours.

New Initiatives

Compassion Ministry

To foster a greater sense of community and support the needs of our Hope staff and student families, a Compassion Ministry has been formed.  This ministry addresses sudden and immediate needs that may occur within our school community such as a hospitalization, critical illness, or other needs where the family would benefit from prepared meals and/or light housekeeping and childcare.

Requests would be handled on an as-needed basis and will be kept discrete.  If you would like to volunteer to be a contact for this ministry, please email Lisa Klym at [email protected]

Fall Book Club for Parents

The summer book club was a success and, therefore, we will be running it again in the fall.  The study book will be “Fresh Wind, Fresh Fire – What Happens When God’s Spirit Invades the Hearts of His People”, by Jim Cymbala.  The discussions will be facilitated by Michele Malmberg.  Participants are to purchase their own book. Community Relations

Monthly Community Newsletter

Name our newsletter!   We are starting a Hope community newsletter published by the Middle School newsletter club.  Submit your ideas for the name of our newsletter to [email protected]

The purpose of the school newsletter is to highlight the ongoing achievements of students, celebrate accomplishments and introduce one another.  The newsletter will be published monthly with a focus on getting to know a student, parent and staff member by way of interviewing or submission of a bio.  Students will be responsible for interviewing and writing the articles as well as other content.  

If your child has a special achievement recently earned or something you’d like to highlight, we are now accepting submissions for the September newsletter.  Please email your story ideas to [email protected].

Going forward, a call for submissions will be posted at the beginning of each month with a distribution date of the last Friday of the month.

Wanted:  50’ Smart TV for Connection Room

We are looking for a new or slightly used TV to use in the Connection Room.  Do you have access to electronic discounts that you could pass on to the school?  Charitable donation? A tax receipt can be issued for the value of a TV.


Alert: Vehicle Valuables

The school office is aware of a recent window damage and theft from vehicle during school time which has been reported to police.  Please do not leave bags or other valuables in your car. If you are aware of suspicious activity around our school, please let our office know. 


Cross Country

Our grade 4 and 5 cross country practices start this Tuesday during lunch time (12:00 to 12:25 pm). Cross country team members must also be participating in the school Km club. Use this link to sign your child up for cross country 

Our race is October 23 at Bear Creek Park in Surrey. We need parent helpers to set up and supervise our runs on Tuesdays and for our special afterschool race on Monday, October 21. Please email Mr. Mathew ([email protected])  if you can help.


Emergency Release

Please make sure your information is up to date for our upcoming Emergency Release Day – October 1, 2:00 pm.  This includes your list of Emergency Contacts who are permitted to pick up your child, in your absence.


Curriculum Evening

Tomorrow – Tuesday, September 17, from 6:30 – 8:00 pm we will be hosting a Curriculum Evening at the Port Coquitlam (Elementary) campus.  We will start in the chapel for a whole school overview of some of our programs, goals, and vision for the upcoming school year. Afterwards, parents will be directed to their child’s classroom(s) to hear about the routines and programs specific to their grade level.  For families with multiple children, we ask that you divide yourselves so that you hear both class presentations if possible (i.e. mom goes to 2B, while dad goes to 4A). Due to space, we ask that children be left at home. Also, at this event we will have a table set up to help with any Seesaw questions.  Please bring your device if you need support setting it up.


Terry Fox Dress Down

This Wednesday we will be doing our whole school Terry Fox Run, after our chapel service. This is a Dress Down day where students are invited to bring $2 (for Cancer Research) and wear their Canada colours (Red and White).  Please ensure that students are able to run comfortably in what they choose, and dress for the weather.


Terry Fox Run

Our school will be participating in the Terry Fox Run again this year.  Pledge sheets have been sent home. Fundraising is optional, but all students will participate in the run after chapel on Wednesday, September 18.  Parent volunteers are needed for this event; please contact Mrs. Berg for more information ([email protected]). Hand Chime Group

Hand chime group for school and church families!  If you are interested in learning to play the hand chimes, come to the church sanctuary (chapel) on Wednesday nights from 7:00 – 8:00 pm.  The group is for any age, Grade 3 to seniors, and could be a fun activity for your family! This group will go until Christmas, and hopefully we can have a few songs ready for the Christmas season!

Individual Student Photo Day – Formal Uniform

Get ready to put on your best smile! Thursday, September 26, is Individual Student Photo Day for both campuses.  Students will be required to be in their formal uniforms.

Hot Lunch Program at Hope Lutheran School

It’s that time of year again! Please log on to http://thelunchlady.ca/ and place your orders for the designated Hot Lunch dates. If you were part of the program last year, there is no need to create a new account. Just log in and choose your child’s name under their new classrooms. If you are new to the program, please scroll down and follow the instructions on how to create a new account. 

Important Ordering Tips: (please read)

  1. Cutlery and straws will only be provided if you select them to order. As part of our school’s litter free campaign, these plastic items will be added to your child’s order upon request 
  2. Condiments – ketchup, mustard, mayo, pickles, lettuce, extra soya sauce packets and extra syrup can be ordered and added to your orders
  3. If you find the Entree’s not enough for your child’s growing appetite, hot and cold side items are available to add to your orders

Our Hot Lunch program is looking for motivated parents to help distribute Hot Lunch from Food Bins delivered by The Lunch Lady, on September 27. Once food has been distributed to the children and checked, please feel free to visit other classrooms that may need your help. We appreciate your time! Please note: classes K-3 need our help the most!

Yearbook Orders

If you would like to order a yearbook for $25 each, you can do so either by cheque or online:

Cheque: pick up a form from the school office to complete; make the cheque out to Hope Lutheran School; on the memo line of the cheque please write “Yearbook”, the school year, your child’s name and their class

Online: go to  http://jostensyearbooks.com/?REF=A01124893 and follow the ordering prompts.

The deadline for ordering yearbooks is January 31, 2020.
