Orange Shirt Day – June 2

Last week we were confronted with the shocking discovery of the remains of 215 children buried on the grounds of the Kamloops Indian Residential School, the home community of the Tk’emlups te Secwépemc Nation.  This news is reverberating around our province, country and the world.

As a community, we are heartbroken and cannot begin to understand the loss and trauma of our Indigenous brothers and sisters.  This is a grim reminder that the story of this land we call home is not what we would have wanted it to be.  We mourn with our nation; we lament the wrongs done to First Peoples and to innocent children; we acknowledge the historical wrongs of our country, understanding that many wrongs persist today;  and we humbly recognize the complicity of faith communities for acts of commission and omission.

In recognition of this loss and in support we encourage our students, staff, and Hope community to wear orange shirts this Wednesday, June 2.  No money will be collected for this dress down day.

The Lutheran Women’s Missionary League (LWML) of Lutheran Church Canada holds a National Convention every 3 years – this year’s convention will be virtual!  Part of the convention is “Servant Events” where mission service activities are done to bless others, in Jesus’ name.

For this convention “Emergency Care Kits” are being created and gathered to be delivered to a local shelter.  Would you like to help prepare some kits?  Deadline for the project is June 15.

Here are the items that you put into a ziploc bag:

  1. kleenex
  2. comb
  3. toothbrush
  4. deodorant
  5. mini shampoo/conditioner

  7. lip balm

You can drop off your kits at the Port Coquitlam campus school/church office by June 15.  Many thanks from the members of the LWML at Hope Lutheran Church.
