Spell-a-thon Fundraiser for the BC Mission Boat Society

THANK YOU to all our HLCS students and families for their tremendous support of this fundraiser! We more than doubled our goal of $3000.00. In total, we raised $6766.75! This means we are able to cover all the costs associated with the middle school BC Boat mission project AND are able to bless them and their ministry with these additional funds. It has been amazing to see God working and how He has blessed our efforts! We are still planning to recognize those classes that raised the most money so keep an eye out for this exciting news as well. Thank you HLCS!

Lutheran Elementary Schools Tournament (LEST) 2021

Although LEST could not happen in person this year, a number of events were held virtually. Some of our Grade 5-8 students participated in the music competition and were recognized for their God-given gifts and talents. Thank you to those students who took the time to prepare, practice, and stay after school last week to have their piece recorded.

Congratulations to the following students who received special recognition from the LEST adjudicators (ribbons and adjudication forms will be mailed to the school):

  • Braden Z. – 5th/6th Grade Piano Blue Ribbon Winner
  • Natalie Z. – 5th/6th Grade Instrumental Solo Blue Ribbon Winner
  • Abby Q. – 7th/8th Grade Instrumental Solo Blue Ribbon Winner
  • Nicole L. – 7th/8th Grade Instrumental Solo Blue Ribbon Winner

Anniversary Musical Cast Information

Attention all classes! Each class will be performing a song in our production which will be rehearsed and filmed on May 10, May 12, and May 13. Recording will run from 8:30 am – 4:30 pm. Classrooms will be recording their scenes from 8:30 am – 3:00 pm. We are asking each student to wear a pair of jeans and a solid coloured t-shirt for these performances. They can be brought to school and changed into for the performance. Small logos on t-shirts are acceptable, but not large ones. Students are also asked to wear their solid coloured Hope mask or another solid coloured mask.

Rehearsals continue Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays after school. Check your email for this weeks’ scenes. This Saturday, there will be an emergency rehearsal from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm at the Port Coquitlam campus for the whole cast. Wear your costume to rehearsal Saturday. Wear your costume and make-up to rehearsal Monday.

Parents, please keep dropping off any prop items you have as soon as possible if you have signed up using this link: Props/Costume Sign-up. Items can be dropped off at the office labelled for Mrs. MacLean. Please ensure your own name is on the item so it can be returned to you.

If any teachers, parents or students would like to partake in our For Good performance, Mrs. MacLean will be accepting recordings of the song until Friday, May 7.  Please record yourself on a plain background, horizontal orientation, singing this song and you will be a part of our last number in our musical!

Musical Update

We are excited to inform you of the showing date of our 25th Anniversary Musical.  It will be shown in a Drive-In Movie style in the Riverside Community Church parking lot on Saturday, June 19.  This will be a wonderful way to end the school year.

A large LED screen will be constructed so that the audience can enjoy the show with the people in their own “bubble” inside their vehicle.  There will be a limit of 50 vehicles per show but there will be multiple showings on that day.  Mark your calendars and stay tuned for ticket sale information coming soon which will be on a first come first serve basis for each show.

Last Day of School – June 22 (Noon Dismissal)

Please be aware that the last day of school will be June 22 with a NOON DISMISSAL.  This extension was due to the addition of several 1/2 day planning days into our calendar for additional teacher preparation. We thank you for your understanding and flexibility with this change.

Community Relations

Musical Production Assistance

Parents – we need you!  There are still some gaps to be filled to enable the filming to run smoothly.

Assistance is required during the recording sessions on May 10, 12 and 13.  Each day, 10am-6pm, is divided into three shifts.  Simple duties may include handing out props, sanitizing, being available to press a button for a spot light, etc.  Nothing elaborate, we just need people.  Please sign up at this link for one or more shifts:  Musical Production Assistance

25 for the 25th!  HLCS BOOK DRIVE

Please support our libraries!

In celebration of our 25th Anniversary a book drive is ongoing to directly benefit our school libraries at both campuses.  Our goal:  25 books for each grade!

Have you had a birthday recently that you’d like to donate a book in honor of your birthday?  We have a special sticker for that too!  Wouldn’t it be cool if your donated book had a 25th anniversary sticker and a birthday sticker attached to it?

Parents – here’s your chance to declutter and clean off your child’s bookshelf.  We’re accepting gently used books as well.

Please view our “Wish List” with tabs based on grade level: HLCS Book Drive

If you wish to make a monetary donation instead to fund the purchase of books, donations can be dropped off at either campus office (please mark your donation “Book Drive”).

Any questions can be directed to Lisa at [email protected]

Community Groups

Small groups are happening within our Hope community utilizing an app-based Bible reading plan that can be read at any time each day.  Each daily reading takes about 10 minutes and space is provided for reflection.  Group members are connected through a chat feature and are engaging in meaningful conversation, getting to know each other better and being supported through prayer.

Men’s, women’s and Chinese groups are ongoing.  If you would like to be a part of a community group, please email Lisa at [email protected] to get connected.

The feedback on these groups has been very positive.  Don’t delay.  Get into community!

Middle School Prayer Group

Each Thursday at lunch time, middle school students meet for prayer and discipleship, facilitated by Mrs. Edema and Mrs. Klym.  The group is faithfully attended by 8-10 students and is open for any student who wants to participate.  A prayer board is featured where students post prayer requests and, as we see God answer these requests, we move them to the praise side.  Students are excited to see the fruit of their prayers.

God is moving in the lives of our students and it’s exciting to see the students grow in their knowledge of Him.  Recently, through the ministry of our middle school, three students have committed their lives to Jesus and we celebrate that!

Parent Prayer

Start your week in community with others. Please consider setting aside 30 minutes of your time at the beginning of each week to join us in prayer for our school.

We will be meeting underneath the tents at the Port Coquitlam Campus by the main entrance.

Every Monday from 9:00 – 9:30 am (except for holidays).

Newsletter Submissions

Submissions are open for the June newsletter.  Looking back, what are some of your highlights?  How have you seen God working in the life of your family?

Do you have a testimonial about our school you’d like to share, perhaps a word of encouragement you’d like to express to the staff and/or our school community as we close out our 2021 school year?

Please send your stories and testimonials to Lisa Klym at [email protected].
