COVID-19 Daily Health Check Website

The K-12 Health Check contains the most up-to-date B.C. health guidelines and is user-friendly for children to complete daily. This resource can assist in preventative measures for families and help with the decision on whether students should attend school that day.  You can also download the app via the following links: iPhone/iPad iOS or Android devices.

Re-enrollment for 2022-2023

Due to our late return to school in January, our re-enrollment period will be pushed back one week to start on February 4, and close Friday, February 18.  Please watch for re-enrollment information to come.

Masking Update

We are very encouraged to see that all our school community has done such a great job of adhering to the masking guidelines. We would like to inform you that there is now a health recommendation for people to wear the 3-ply masks as opposed to the reusable single layer cloth ones.  We do have these 3-ply masks available in the classroom for your child if they would like to switch.

Please be aware that there can be the rare case where a student or staff member may have a legitimate mask exemption in place. We appreciate your understanding and grace in these circumstances.  The school will work with these individuals to find alternative ways to be safe, to distance and to lower the risk.

Chapel Offering for UGM

During our January-March we typically collect toiletries for the Union Gospel Mission (UGM) as part of our chapel offerings along with any money we collect.  With the continuing COVID restrictions it has changed what they are able to offer in their ministry to the homeless.  This year they are asking for tins of coffee, as they hand out 600-700 cups a day.  To save space in storing these we are asking families wishing to offer coffee to this ministry to hold on to the tins until February 10, at which point students can bring them to school and we can store them until UGM visits on February 17 to present our chapel message.

Open House

We’ve learned from our admissions interviews that an overwhelming majority of our applicants come to our school because of word-of-mouth recommendations from our school community.  We are thankful that you, our parents, are our best advertisers.

Do you know of a family ready to explore education options for their child?  Do you have friends or family looking for a school that offers more than just an academic education, one that you can call home?  Invite them to attend our virtual open house on January 20th.

Please pick up an open house postcard in the office or forward this digital information sheet and encourage them to check out The Hope Difference.  Registration is online at hopelcs.ca/school

Middle Years Development Instrument (MDI)

HLCS has partnered with the Federation of Independent School Association in BC (FISABC) and the Human Early Learning Partnership (HELP) at UBC to invite students to take part in completing the Middle Years Development Instrument (MDI). The MDI is a self-report questionnaire that asks children in Grades 4 & 8 about their thoughts, feelings and experiences in school and in the community. The survey questions align with the BC Ministry of Education’s K-12 curriculum which includes a focus on promoting children’s personal and social competencies. The questionnaire will be administered the week of January 17. Please review the email that was sent last week for more information.

Parent Prayer

You are invited and welcome to join other parents and our school administration to pray (even if you’ve never prayed before!). Please consider setting aside 30 minutes of your time at the beginning of each week to join us for Parent Prayer as we pray for our school, families, and community.

We will be meeting outside at the elementary Campus by the main entrance.

Every Monday from 9:00 – 9:30 am (except for holidays).

Chocolate and Dumpling Sales

Back by popular demand and just in time for your Lunar New Year festivities, we will have a Dumpling Sale.  Two flavours of pork dumplings will be offered at $20/1kg package (~45 pieces each).  For this week only, please pre-ordered your quantities:  Dumpling Order Form.  This order form will be open until the end of day Friday, January 21.

Orders will be ready for pick up on Friday, January 28 at the Elementary Campus only and CASH ONLY payment will be taken at the time of pickup.  Proceeds will benefit the Grade 8 missions project, in partnership with BC Mission Boat Society, happening at the end of March.

Also on January 28, a Purdy’s chocolate bar sale will take place at both campuses to fund the grades 5 and 8 year-end celebrations.  The bars sold on this date will be specially wrapped for Chinese New Year.  Please pre-order your quantities using this online form:  Purdy’s Chocolate Bars.  Standard and specialty bars available from $2-$4 per item.  This form will be open until the end of day next Tuesday, January 26.

A second sale will take place on Friday, February 11, just in time for Valentine’s Day, which you will be able to pre-order for as well.

Please send your submissions to Lisa Klym at [email protected].

Hope Prayer Community

As a church & school, we want to be a praying community.  We desire to lean on the Lord we love, constantly seeking His wisdom, guidance and encouragement.

With many major decisions in front of both the church & school, we are launching a joint church/ school monthly time of prayer to be held in the Sanctuary

Our first gathering will take place on Tuesday, January 25th.  Gatherings will be the 4th Tuesday of each month from 7:30-8:30pm

Please consider joining us as we engage in prayer for our church and school as they each consider their future plans and directions (and their relationship to each other).

People of all languages are welcome; prayer does not need to be done in English.  Whether you are comfortable praying in public or not, you are welcome.  There is no signup; please, come as you are.

We are looking for musical people to partner with us in these evenings. If you are musical and willing to lead us in a time of worship, would you please let us know by emailing Lisa at [email protected].    Worship leadership counts towards the parent participation hours.
