School Communication

Over the weekend a few families reached out to share that they received and an email from Pastor Hautz and Jennifer Watson.  That email was a scam and our IT department confirms we have not been compromised. Please note that any communication from the school will have our school signature at the bottom (theme verse, school addresses/contact info, and confidentiality notice) and be from our hopelcs.ca domain. If you received this email, please do NOT respond to it and delete the message.

Middle School Experience for Grade 5 Students

Next week our grade 5 classes will each have the opportunity to experience middle school. Parents please look for additional details coming from the classroom teachers.

Later in the week there will be a Middle School Experience Zoom meeting for both grade 4 & 5 parents.  More details to follow.

Christmas Musical Cast Party

Next week on January 18, we will have our cast party at the elementary campus, after school. Come with your favorite memories, and be prepared to eat a snack of some kind. This is our way of thanking the actors and dancers for all their hard work!

2023-24 Re-enrolment Period for Current Families

Re-enrolment for our current school families for the 2023-2024 school year will be opening on Friday, January 27 and will close Friday, February 10.  Please watch your email for the 2023-24 Re-enrolment forms.  This is an important time for the school community as this sets the framework for what classes will look like for the 2023-24 school year.  We thank you for the attention and promptness you will put in your response during the upcoming re-enrolment period.

City of Port Coquitlam Celebrates May Days 2023

Planning has begun for the 100th May Days festivities, please see the following information from the City of Port Coquitlam regarding a part of this year’s festival.

Royal Party: The Royal Party is a historical Port Coquitlam tradition. Being a Royal Party member provides opportunities for children to develop community leadership skills. The Royal Party consists of Flower Girls and Junior Lancers from Grades 1 and 2, and Princesses and Lancers from Grades 4 and 5. Members of the Royal Party will be randomly selected from interested applicants.

The Royal Party will learn a couple of simple hip hop dances led by a professional dance choreographer. These dances will be performed at the May Days Opening Ceremonies on Friday, May 5th, 2023. Participants will be required to attend dance practices at the Port Coquitlam Community Centre twice per week, beginning in February. A more detailed list of Royal Party events and responsibilities will be provided upon selection of interested participants. There will be a Parent Information Meeting on Thursday, January 26th, 2023 for parents of the children who are selected to be part of the Royal Party.

To apply for the Royal Party, please submit your application online at www.portcoquitlam.ca/maydays by Friday, January 20th, 2023.

March Ski Trip

School-wide ski trip is still available to be filled out to determine our numbers.  No lessons will be offered but anyone who would like to come up to Mt. Seymour and have a ski or snowboard day with friends are welcome to join. This is open to both elementary and middle school campuses. This form is to determine how many parents and students are coming and how many rentals and passes are needed. Group rate has been posted on our email before the winter break. If you have any questions or inquiries, please feel free to email Diana at cuonganddiana@shaw.ca.

Reading Link

Reading Link is looking for parent volunteers who are interested in creating quiz style questions for our students to practice for their competition this year. The job requires reading a novel and creating questions that can be used during weekly meetings with students. Proficiency in the English language is required and volunteers can expect to earn 8-12 volunteer hours. This job can be done entirely at home. If interested, please contact Mrs. LeRoss at kleross@hopelcs.ca for more information.

Support the Grade 8 Mission Trip

Please consider supporting the Grade 8 mission trip – donate your returnable beverage containers.  Labels with our school’s QR code can be obtained in either campus office or printed at any Express Return-It depot by using the phone number 604-111-2222.

All proceeds raised will go directly towards the spring mission trip.

Parent Prayer

You are invited and welcome to join other parents and our school administration to pray (even if you’ve never prayed before!). Please consider setting aside 30 minutes of your time at the beginning of each week to join us for Parent Prayer as we pray for our school, families, and community.

We meet outside at the Elementary Campus by the main entrance.

Every Monday from 8:45 – 9:15 am (except for holidays).

CommUNITY Relations

Newsletter

You may be wondering, what happened to the January newsletter?  You didn’t miss it.  We have delayed publication to allow us to include some exciting news that we wanted to be sure to share with our Hope Community.  Watch your inboxes on Wednesday for a link to the January Hope Herald.

Submissions are open for the February newsletter.  During February we hold our annual Intentional Acts of Kindness challenge.  What do you do to extend kindness to others?  Are you serving in a ministry or volunteering in a community group?  If so, we’d like to hear from you. Inspire others to do good by sharing your story.  Please email to Lisa Klym at lklym@hopelcs.ca.

Open House – January 24th

We’ve learned from our admissions interviews that an overwhelming majority of our applicants come to our school because of word-of-mouth recommendations from our school community.  We are thankful that you, our parents, are our best advertisers.

Do you know of a family looking for a great school to call home?  Please tell them about your experience with Hope and refer them to our website athopelcs.ca/school to register their attendance for our open house taking place Tuesday, January 24th 6:30 pm.

Information postcards were sent home with each student for you to hand out to anyone you know considering education options for their children.

Also, we are looking for a few parents to act as Parent Ambassadors and interact with prospective families after the tours.  The expectation is to be present in the gym from 7:00 – 8:00 pm and answer any questions parents may have about our school.  If this interests you, please let Lisa know at lklym@hopelcs.ca.

CommUNITY Event – Friday, January 27!

Celebrate Your Heritage and join us for a night of commUNITY.

Please indicate your attendance on this Potluck Registration Form and, once registered, tickets can be purchased at either campus office – $5 per person or $20 for a family.

This event will also include an Author Chat with two resident authors, a Scholastic Book Fair, a book walk for a chance to win prizes, and other fun literary activities for all ages.

Our last potluck dinner was an amazing success with a vast variety of ethnic foods.  We hope to repeat the experience so pull out your recipe books and consider what cultural dish you can contribute that celebrates your family heritage.  All attendees are to bring a food item (sweet or savoury) to feed 12 people.  Provision of food will count for one hour of parent participation time.

Prayer Community

Wondering about a new year’s resolution?  How about making prayer a priority for 2023?  Join our community of prayer partners as we gather each week at the Elementary Campus entrance and each month in the Chapel to pray for our school community and beyond.
Prayer meetings take place every Monday at 8:45 am outside the Elementary entrance and the last Tuesday of each month at 7:30pm in the Elementary Chapel – all are welcome and children are encouraged to participate in the evening prayer time.

Our next evening gathering is Tuesday, January 31 at 7:30 pm – hope to see you there.

New Online Small Groups

New online Bible reading groups for both men and women are happening but it’s not too late to join.  Please email Lisa to receive a link to join a group (lklym@hopelcs.ca).

Upcoming Events

Please refer to our Community Calendar for a list of events throughout the year.

Parent Teacher League (PTL) News

Our next PTL meeting takes place on Thursday, January 19th at 7:00 pm over Zoom.  A connection link will be shared with parents closer to the meeting date.  In the meantime, please review the November minutes.

Maypole Dance Instruction

Port Coquitlam is celebrating their 100th May Day this spring.  We would like to put together a Maypole Dance Team for Hope students in grades 3-5 but, here’s the catch – a commitment from parent volunteers to instruct the four dances is required.

A Maypole Lead Instructor is available to teach the dances to the volunteer instructors and to support them as needed during practices. Practices begin after Spring Break and occur twice per week in the elementary campus gym before, during, or after school hours.

Parents, if you are interested in learning the four dances to teach to our students, Mrs. Watson needs to hear from you by Wednesday, January 18thOnce we know that we have the instructional support in place, we will make a signup form available for students to apply.

Please browse the list of ongoing opportunities and let us know where you are able to lend a hand.
