Our hope is that Jesus is stronger than death.

It was a Thursday morning years ago, and we were going to Jay’s appointment with Dr. Meyers, who would assess her breast cancer condition to schedule the surgery. If you have ever driven or walked to a waiting room like that, you understand the feeling. However, that morning she had also taken a pharmacy pregnancy test, and it came back positive. A baby was on the way. If you have been met by good news amid a hard situation, you know the feeling as well.[1]

Now, both were running side by side. In the same appointment, we would learn the next steps in the cancer treatment, and the doctor would learn that her patient had just discovered she was pregnant.

On the way to the hospital, walking on a cold October morning in Saskatchewan, we didn’t talk much. But I remember Jay, living with all the mixed emotions of that moment, expressing words that reshaped the way I faced all the unknowns that were coming our way. Perhaps not exactly like this, but she said: If Jesus Himself was willing to give His life for me on His Cross, I am ready to do whatever is needed for the life of this baby.[2] What I heard in those words was: hat is, I know this is going to be tough, but I trust the one who went through the toughest moment of all to give me life and hope.

As you heard my story, you might have been reminded of a similar moment in your life. Lots of uncertainty and plenty of unknowns coming your way. That morning, we were faced with the possibility that our family could suffer loss. Perhaps not one, but two. Some of you are here today carrying the grief of someone you have already lost. Those are not the same experience. But as Christians, we need the same thing: we need what God has promised to our life.

The most important thing that challenging times reveal is where strength, peace and a sense of direction in the middle of uncertainty come from. What God has revealed to us about death, dying, and the last things bring effective comfort, strength, and hope in times of darkness. They come from the Hope we have in Christ.

Because our hope is not that death hurts less than we thought. Our hope is that Jesus is stronger than death.

Paul speaks of this hope when he writes to the Thessalonians. He is writing to a church dealing with questions concerning what happens to Christians who die before Jesus returns. What would happen to them when Jesus returned? Had they missed something? Would they be left behind?

The answer Paul gives to their questions, and their grief, doesn’t in the form of a command to stop grieving. He does not say, “You should know better than to cry.” He tells them that they do not need to grieve like those who have no hope.

Notice the difference. He does not say, “Do not grieve.” He says, “Your grief is not without hope.”

We need that distinction. Sometimes we hear comforting words that may sound good but are not connected to the Biblical hope we have. People usually mean well. They are trying to find something to say when words are difficult. But words such as becoming a star or an angel don’t match Scripture’s teaching.[3] More importantly, Christian hope rests on something more concrete and definite than a comforting picture or a human wish.

Paul shows us that it is okay to grieve. We are not forbidden from crying, facing our insecurities and having our moments of darkness. Not because we like them, but because they are interwoven in our broken human experience. But then he goes on to ground our hope in Jesus’ death and resurrection. Jesus died and rose again. And those who belong to Him will not be forgotten or left behind. When Jesus returns, the dead in Christ will rise. Death will not keep their bodies in the grave. His promise is that “we will always be with the Lord.” Jesus was willing to give his life for us. We are called to commit our way to Him and trust that he will take care of things, as Psalm 37:5 lets us know.

And who are the ones who will be with the Lord mentioned by Paul? That also clarifies what happens in life. They are those whose lives were lived in faith in Jesus. Lives washed clean in the blood of the Lamb(Rrev. 7) and whose salvation was not earned but received as a precious gift. No condemnation, no hell, but blessed eternal life in Him.

These are the “blessed” Jesus names in Matthew 5. Not people who are blessed because they own things, because they go places, because they are healed from an illness, or because they have more than enough. All of these can be present, but a “blessed” person is one who is connected to the fount of every blessing, Jesus, and to the fruit that His blessings generate in his or her life.

And that is where Jesus’ words in the Gospel also sustain us today: “Blessed are those who mourn.” Not because mourning is a good feeling. Not because losing someone we love brings a joyful sensation. But because His promise is for the person who is mourning: “They shall be comforted.”

But we can’t skim over why Paul is teaching the Thessalonians these things. It is not just about knowledge and apologetics. It is about encouragement: “Encourage one another with these words.” Here’s why this is encouragement:

Because it gives us hope that goes beyond life.

Because it gives perspective to our life here.

Because it shows that the sufferings of the present time are not to be compared to future glory with Jesus.

Because we know that those who have already departed in faith are in Jesus, and we will see them again.

Ultimately, because we know that no matter what we are facing right now – be it something only somewhat challenging or something really hard—we know we have Jesus, who is no stranger to suffering, but gave us the hope that is stronger than suffering and death: life. Full life. Eternal life. We know that those who walk with Christ are in Him and will be with Him until our last breath on this Earth. Because unless the Lord comes first, one day we will die. But all other days, before our death and after our death, we will live. Death is a comma, not a period, not the last word. Life is the last and everlasting word.

Conclusion – We entered the doctor’s room facing uncertainty and the unknown. We could not control everything that was coming next, and for that matter, neither could the doctor. But the plan was hashed out, and we went on to face both joy and challenge. Lots to pray and to work on. What was different for us as Christians, though, was the hope that rests in Jesus.

After all uncertainty, endurance and trust, she didn’t have to lay her life down. Both of them are here with us, Jay and this beautiful seven-year-old young lady you see in the church regularly.

I know that not all stories go like that. Some have a better ending, some have a worse one, from our human perspective. On another example from my personal story, during the 2021 pandemic, we prayed for my father’s life for weeks, but after 35 days in the hospital, he was called by the Lord. My heart aches with you today if you are going through pain, grief or challenging times.

However, while each story is different, all stories by faith in Jesus are under God’s love and soaked in Hope. Hope that doesn’t rest in our desired outcomes but in the outcome Jesus won for us. Our hope is not that death hurts less than we thought. Our hope is that Jesus is stronger than death.

And God’s Word teaches that all stories connected to the Cross end up in the same place, as described by Paul. We will be forever with the Lord. For in Jesus, we know that death stings but doesn’t last. What really lasts is the everlasting life.

______________________________

[1] I open my sermon today with a personal touch I don’t usually use. But it helps to show that dealing with challenges related to grief, death and hope is not only something I have studied so that I can preach to you about it.

[2] Hearing a story about facing difficult challenges may lead someone to think, “But you are a pastor (Or you are a Christian). You should be very well prepared and strong for such a situation.” Well, in one hand I was, as a Christian who trusts that the Lord would be the stronghold and provider during that hard time. And to some extent I wasn’t, as a human who gets unstable before situations we can’t control. While we gather energy and strength from places we didn’t know we had, we are also taken to places and feelings we never experienced before.

[3] I don’t think things have changed much. We don’t have fewer, but certainly more theories and ideas to explain death and eternity that are not warranted by Scripture.

“He or she went to a better place”—that is the presumption. There is a sense in our culture that everyone must have gone to a better place. To the upper level. To heaven. The “God is love” refrain is invoked to justify the idea that everyone is saved.

“There’s no end; the universe is an eternal cycle.” This is not new at all. That can be found in Ancient Greece already.

“He or she became an angel in heaven or a star in the sky”—used to try to comfort people while offering something that is not possible.

“If you are good enough in life, you will be saved.” Here the focus is not on Christ, but on human achievement.

Text: 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18; Matt. 5:1–12 Theme: “We grieve with Hope” ____________________________ Introduction – Here’s a thought to start our All Saints Day sermon, a day in which we remember both the reality of death and the Hope of life: Our hope is not that death hurts less than we thought.
