Curriculum Evening – September 21

Our teachers are getting ready to share with you, our parent community, about their curriculum, routine, and expectations. This event will be an online event, 6:30 – 8:00 pm, due to indoor restrictions.  Zoom information will be communicated closer to the date.

Lice Check

This school year with COVID restrictions still somewhat in place, our lice checks will continue to be conducted from home.  We are asking all our elementary families to please conduct a lice check at home with their child(ren) and return a signed copy of the form provided indicating you have completed this. Students are to return the form to their teacher by Wednesday, September 22.

LICE CHECK FORM – (please complete & send back to teacher)

We are also attaching documents to help with the steps of a lice check and more information on what lice is, how to detect, and treat.  If you have further questions please contact Gail Madanayake at gail_espiritu@hotmail.com.

Parent Prayer

You are invited and welcome to join other parents and our school administration to pray (even if you’ve never prayed before!). Please consider setting aside 30 minutes of your time at the beginning of each week to join us for Parent Prayer as we pray for our school, families, and community.

We will be meeting outside at the elementary Campus by the main entrance.

Every Monday from 9:00 – 9:30 am (except for holidays).

Save the Date! – Saturday, October 16

We are excited to share with you that plans are in the works for a special family event on Saturday, October 16 (12-3pm and 4-7pm). A HLCS Harvest Festival!  We have a group of parents planning games, prizes, food, and more for this Harvest Fest event.  Please stay tuned for more information about purchasing tickets and what will be offered.  We look forward to the community-building fellowship this will bring to our Hope families and friends.

Parent Teacher League (PTL) News

Parent Volunteering

Please keep track of hours spent in helping the school.  Tracking sheets will be sent out within the next week or two and, once received from your Class Liaison, you may enter your hours there.

A reminder to parents to have a Criminal Record Clearance letter on file with the school office.  Volunteer activities that have interaction with students require a current CRC letter. Please email Mrs. Klassen at pococampus@hopelcs.ca for the link and code to apply.

Lunch Supervision Needed

We are looking for parent volunteers to assist with lunch hour supervision for Fall Term (September 20-December 15).  A parent will need to volunteer for a day or two every week for the entire term.  There are 13 weeks in this term so most of your Term 1 volunteer hours will be covered!  If you are unable to commit to the entire 13 weeks, you can share the load with your husband/wife or parents as parents and grandparents can volunteer.

The timing of the lunch supervision is as follows:

  • 12:00-12:20 pm: Outdoor Supervision at the park or at the school parking lot (depends on the weather)
  • 12:20-12:45 pm: In class supervision ONLY for Grades K to 2.  Only one parent will be allowed in each classroom.

Example: A parent with a student in grade four can volunteer from 12:00-12:20 pm for outdoor supervision, and a parent with a student in grade one can volunteer 12:00-12:20 pm  for outdoor and 12:20-12:45 pm in the classroom.

Masks are mandatory while inside the school and are encouraged while outside as well.

If you are able to help out, please email Agnes White at agneswhite0106@gmail.com with the following information:

SUBJECT LINE:  Lunch Supervision

Student(s)’ Name(s) and Class

Thanks again for everything you do for our Hope community.   If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Agnes.

Staff Appreciation

Last year our parents showed appreciation to our staff by supplying the staff rooms with treats and quick meal items such as granola bars, cookies, noodle bowls, and canned soup.  Staff were touched by the gesture and enjoyed having a reason to get out of their classroom and meet in the staff room over a coffee and cookie.  Staff were also appreciative of a light meal of soup if working late unexpectedly. If parents would like to continue with this, you may drop off your food items to either campus office.  Every $10 spent on food items will count as 1 hour towards the parent participation hours.

Km Club has Started!

Kilometre (Km) Club started today and will run M/W/F from 3:20-3:50 pm October 13 (12 days) at McLean Park.  Middle school students, please meet us at McLean Park.

Those grades 4-7 participating in the October cross-country meet must participate in Km Club at least twice a week as the Club serves as training for that competition.  We will run in light rain – please dress for the weather.  In the event of heavy rain, a decision to cancel will be made by 2:30 pm on the day of the run.  Parents/caregivers must be present while the child participates.

If your child would like to participate but did not register, the registration form will be reopened for this week only:  Km Club Registration

Those who cannot make the after school times runs will be permitted to run Km Club from home.  This provision is based on the honor system.  Please contact Lisa Klym at lklym@hopelcs.ca to participate in this way.

Thank you to those parents who have signed up to help facilitate our club.  There are a few positions still available and time spent counts towards parent participation hours.  Please see the signup at the following link for areas of service: Km Club Parent Assistance

PTL Executive Call for Nominations

The PTL Executive positions are 2-year commitments and after the two years, the position is to be open for nominations to give any interested parents an opportunity to serve on the Executive.

The role of President has been filled by Lisa Klym for the last two years and the PTL is now accepting nominations for President.  Any parents wishing to step into this role, please email the PTL at hopelutheranptl@hopelcs.ca.  This call for nominations will be posted for four consecutive weeks and any nominations will be discussed and voted on at our November 4 PTL meeting.

Additionally, the roles of Vice-President and Secretary are vacant and available immediately for interested parents.  If you are interested in serving, have any questions or require further information, please email the PTL.

Family Portraits Fundraiser

A Family Portraits Fundraiser is being coordinated by our PTL, taking place on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at select times from September 22 through October 23.  This is a great opportunity for families to have a professional photo taken with a portion of the session fee directly benefiting the school.  There are two locations to choose from – Pitt River Dyke and Peace Park.  Pets are welcome to be a part of the photo shoot as long as they are leashed and under the control of the adult pet owner.  Our photographer is our own Michelle O’Dell and a gallery of her work can be viewed on Facebook at Michelle Evans Photography or on Instagram at:

https://www.instagram.com/michelleevansphotography/

A message from Mrs. O’Dell:

“While photography started as a hobby for me, I have had the opportunity to photograph two weddings, some family photos, and have also had the opportunity to second shoot weddings for my good friend Esther at Esther Moerman Photo. I would consider my photography and editing style to be quite hybrid in that I love capturing candid photos of people, but will gladly accommodate a more posed look if requested.  I really like to work with what the weather gives me when it comes to editing as lighting is a big part of photography – if it is a more overcast day, I will take advantage of the lack of harsh lighting and edit to the mood of the photo; if it is a brighter day, I will edit to bring out the beautiful lighting.”

For a flat rate of $50 (60% of which will be donated to Hope Lutheran Christian School), you will get:

  • a 30 minute session at either Peace Park off Kebet Way OR along the Pitt River Dyke off Old Dewdney Trunk Rd (Please make note of which dates will be at each location when you sign up);
  • complimentary editing; and
  • ALL usable photos in the form of an online gallery which you can download your photos from.

**Note: Michelle Evans Photography  reserves the right to use any and all photos from your session for social media and promotional purposes.

Sessions will start Wednesday, September 22nd and will run every Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday (with the exception of Thanksgiving) until Saturday, October 23rd.

Payment will be required the Monday before your scheduled session and can be dropped off at the Elementary school office. Only cash or cheque addressed to Michelle O’Dell will be accepted. Failure to make your payment, will result in the loss of your session time.  To sign up for a session time, please register here:  Photo Sessions (please note the two tabs, for Weds/Thurs & Sat)

Parent volunteers are also needed to help Mrs. O’Dell for each photo session.  Duties include helping with session transitions and coordinating the waiting family, holding the backpack of photo gear and holding an umbrella over camera in the event of rain.  Please view the volunteer sign-up form here:  Photographer’s Assistant

Community Relations

Parents are encouraged to be involved in the community through joining an online Bible reading plan app, facilitated by Lisa Klym, Community Relations Officer.  Plans usually range from 7-14 days and each daily reading takes no more than 10 minutes.  Space is provided at the end of each daily reading for reflection and optional feedback to the group.  This is a great way to get to know other parents and be intentional about being in God’s Word.  Anyone is welcome to join.  Whether you are unsure of the Christian faith, new to the faith or a mature Christian, this is a safe space to explore and grow.  Please email Lisa at lklym@hopelcs.ca if you wish to be involved and she can provide you with the connection details for accessing the app.
