A follow-up session will take place on Tuesday, September 25 at 3:15 pm in the Chapel.

Km Club
Kilometer Club is back by popular demand! This fall we are conducting a 5-week run/walk around McLean Park starting Monday, September 17 and going until Wednesday, October 24. Runs will take place Mondays and Wednesdays after school, as well as Tuesdays at lunch. This will also serve as a training run for the grade 4 & 5 students participating in the Cross Country Track Meet (October 25).
A sign-up form was sent home with your child last week. For your child to participate, the completed form is to be handed in prior to Wednesday, September 12.
About 15-20 volunteers are needed each day for the running of this event. If your child is participating, it is strongly encouraged that caregivers volunteer a minimum of three times throughout the duration of the run. Volunteers are needed to: set up, hand out wristbands, conduct warm-up, be a course spotter, stamp and/or tally laps, clean up, run concession. (Please note, Tuesday volunteers require a completed Criminal Record Check to be on file with the school office.) Your time spent helping with the Km Club counts towards the Parent Volunteer Hours.
To volunteer please see the following link: Km Club Volunteer
Please email Lisa Klym, Km Club Coordinator at lisaklym@telus.net if you have any questions about this event.
Passing the Baton
Km Club is run twice a year – once in the fall and once in the spring. Enthusiastic volunteers are needed this fall to job shadow the Club Coordinator position and the Event Overseer position to be able to take over these roles next year. Some of our volunteer base will be moving on to the middle school campus and we’d like to have new volunteers trained and in place for the following school year. Role expectations include:
Club Coordinator: Responsible for administrative functions of the KM club including creating sign-up forms for volunteers, spreadsheets for tracking laps, advertising and recruitment, creation and maintenance of supplies, ordering and distribution of awards, etc. Bonus: this position fulfills volunteer requirements for the term.
Event Overseer: To stay for the duration of the run to oversee event, create/repair wristbands on an as-needed basis, answer any questions, ensure proper set-up and clean-up. Typically also does the timekeeper role but this can be shared with another person. Requires being at the field 30 min. before start of run until final cleanup is done and supplies are stored away (2 hour commitment each run day). Ideally, this role is shared between several people, each person taking one or two days a week.
Km Club involvement is an excellent way for new families to get to know the school community.
Any parents/caregivers interested in either of these roles can contact Lisa Klym at lisaklym@telus.net for more information.
Middle School Curriculum Evening
Elementary school parents are invited to attend our upcoming Curriculum Evening on Wednesday, September 19 at 7:00 pm. Parents will have the opportunity to learn more about the Middle School program including curriculum, extra-curriculars, L.E.S.T., and much more. Please plan to attend!
Note: students are allowed to attend but it is not mandatory that they do.
Cross Country
Grade 4 and 5 cross country practices start on Thursday, September 27, during lunch time. All grade 4 and 5 students who regularly run in Km Club can participate on the Cross Country team for the race on October 25 at Bear Creek Park in Surrey. Any parents who want to help train our runners should contact Mr. Mathew dmathew@hopelcs.ca.
Practices are planned for Thursdays during lunch. Permission slips will be distributed next week.

Crayola Colorcycle Program
To save markers from the landfill, Hope Lutheran School will be participating in the Crayola ColorCycle program this year. Crayola will recycle any brand of marker, including dry erase markers and highlighters. The program is simple. Students collect dry markers and deposit them into a collection box in their classroom. At the end of the school year we will ship them off to Crayola to be recycled. The Crayola company will pay all shipping costs.
