Principal’s Post

The Christian Principal’s Association of BC conference was held at a retreat centre surrounded by beautiful grounds nestled in the Sumas prairie. At one end of the gardens emerges a cross tucked in amongst the trees. If you follow our school Facebook page you will have seen the pictures. I write this devotional thought while sitting at the foot of the cross resting and wondering at the great love that Jesus must have for us as one who suffered our punishment, even death so that we might have eternal life with God, our Father.

As I savor this quiet time, I am reminded of the nugget of wisdom that my mother shared with me on one especially exasperating day of parenting three preschool boys.  She encouraged me to begin each day communing with God; reading my Bible, communicating with God through prayer and inviting Him into my day to be part of this race called life.

A couple of weekends ago a team of Hope students and parents participated in the Creek Classic Triathlon. As I participated as an observer, I couldn’t help but be reminded of the words in Hebrews 12 that compare life to a race. In it we are reminded to run with perseverance, fixing our eyes on Jesus. At the triathlon there were individuals and teams racing, some with smiles and some suffering obvious anguish and pain, but there was a much larger group of parents, teammates, friends, and even strangers who were cheering them on. It seemed that those with the most obvious signs of distress hailed the loudest cheers.  It was a beautiful picture of God’s desire for the Kingdom of God.

In Hebrews 12 it talks about a cloud of witnesses, the faithful from the past, who are cheering us on in the faith. Paul writes in 1 Thessalonians 5:11 that we are to “…encourage one another and build each other up….” We can be both racers and cheerleaders as we team together to bring up our children in the ways to the Lord.

As a Christian school, we want to consider ways that we might encourage one another perhaps by overlooking imperfections and irritations as we run fixing our eyes on Jesus who promises to run alongside and even carry us as we press to the finish and receive the victorious crown of life.

It is finally spring as evidenced by tulips ablaze, the warmer sunshine, and goslings swimming on the pond. It is a time of new life and the promise of lazy summer days. As we encourage our children to persevere in completing their school year strong let us join together in reminding them daily to invite Jesus into their day and fix their eyes on Him.
