The Thinking Series

The Thinking Series is a video resource that tackles the top five questions our culture is asking today. These questions are:

  • What is the Meaning of Life?
  • Does God Exist?
  • Do All Religions Lead to God?
  • Why is There Evil?
  • Is There Life after Death?

If you have ever asked yourself these questions, or if your children have ever asked these questions of you, help is on the way! Please join Pastor Laverne Hautz (of Hope Lutheran Church) for a series of discussions intended specifically for school parents.

The next session will be held in the chapel tonight, Monday January 9, 7:30 – 8:30 pm, and the topic will be “Does God Exist?” A brief story video (4 minutes) will be followed by a brief discussion. Then a longer teaching video (10 minutes) will be followed by a little bit longer discussion of the topic question.

All school parents are invited to attend, and you are welcome to bring along other friends or family members who may be interested in the topic. The other topics will follow on about a once-a-month basis.

Chess Club

Students in Grades 3 to 6 who are interested in joining the Chess Club, which will meet at lunch on Tuesdays, must attend an information meeting tomorrow, January 10. The club begins on January 17. Students are required to know how to play chess. Any questions should be directed to the sponsor teachers, Mrs. Chifan or Ms. Chan.

Spirit Days

Spirit Days are coming up,  January 24 – 26.  Each day will have a different dress up theme:
Tuesday – Future Self Day (e.g. dress up as the career you would like to be when you grow up, or hobbies you think you will continue doing as an adult)
Wednesday – Jersey Day (wear something that shows your support for a favourite team or athlete and wear athletic bottoms because we are going to be active that day)
Thursday – Madagascar Day (e.g. dress in the colours of the flag, as an animal found on the island, or your own creative idea)
More information about specific activities will be provided next week.  Stay tuned for parent volunteer opportunities (it’s a good chance to get some hours before the January 31 cut off).

Jump Rope for Heart

This year the Port Coquitlam campus is participating in an optional fundraiser for the Heart & Stroke foundation through an event called, “Jump Rope for Heart”.  Pledge forms are going home today and are due on January 25, 2017.

Please see Jump Rope for Heart’s website at www.jumpropeforheart.ca for online donations, as well as an invitation you can send to friends and family online.  Our school will be participating in “Jump Rope” on Wednesday, January 25 as part of our Spirit Week.  Children will be doing different skipping stations.  If you have any questions, please see Mrs. Stewart or email her at jstewart@hopelcs.ca.

Winter Dress

The students will be going outside during recess times so please make sure that your child comes to school with a warm, winter jacket, hat, gloves/mittens/scarf, and boots.  Students can wear white undershirts under their school shirt and long underwear or tights under pants.  Just a reminder that pants are available through the uniform store for girls from K-12.  Outer ski pants may also be worn outside at recess to keep legs warm.  Black leggings are not to be worn in class. Thank you for helping your children in being prepared for the cold, winter weather.

Reading Link Volunteers

Reading Link is looking for volunteers to help with reading and creating questions, to help prepare Reading Link students for their competition in the spring.  Duties would include reading a grade 4/5 level book and creating questions using a provided template.  All hours reading and creating questions can be used towards volunteer hours, and can be completed at home.  Each book and set of questions is approximately 7 – 8 hours of time.  Questions would be due the first week of school, in January 2017.  If interested please email Kristin Le Ross at kristin.leross@mytwu.ca for more information.

Paid On-Call Position

Individuals interested in working on-call as a parking lot and/or playground supervisor are encouraged to submit their resume to Mrs. Eisner as soon as possible. Applicants require a thorough knowledge of traffic safety, strong communication skills, a good rapport with children, and the flexibility to work as needed. First aid is an asset. A clear criminal record check is required for this position. Training will be provided.

Lice Check Volunteers

January 13 will be a lice check at the Port Coquitlam campus and we are looking for volunteers to help out.  If you have a couple of hours you can give to this event on the Friday morning, please contact the school office.
